What Employee Training is Required in CA?
by Simple Learning System | April 11, 2024
California is the most regulated state in the US, with nearly 4x the regulations of other states. As a result, California companies not only have many rules to follow but also need to ensure that their employees do the same. Required training will vary depending on your position and the industry you work in; however, here are a few examples of commonly required types of training you may be required to provide your employees.
Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
All employers with five or more employees are required to provide sexual harassment prevention training to their employees within six months of hire and every two years thereafter.
Workplace Health and Safety Training
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to provide training in the safety and health aspects of their positions.
Note: This excludes self-employed workers, immediate family members of farm employers, and workers whose hazards are regulated by another federal agency (for example, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Department of Energy, the Federal Aviation Administration, or the Coast Guard).
Anti-Discrimination and Diversity Training
Employers in California with 50 or more employees must provide anti-discrimination training to supervisory employees. Employees must undergo training once every two years and all supervisory employees are required to take the training within six months of starting their position.
Industry-Targeted Training Programs
Some sectors within California require unique training prerequisites. For instance, organizations within the technology sector must offer their workforce training on cybersecurity measures, ensuring they are adept at protecting sensitive information. Similarly, those operating in the hospitality industry are obligated to furnish their employees with customer service excellence training aimed at enhancing guest satisfaction and experience.
Mandatory Reporter Training
Many employers are required to provide Mandated Reporter Training.
California Assembly Bill 1963 requires companies that employ minors and have more than 5 employees to provide mandated reporter training for HR employees and supervisors of teen workers.
California Assembly Bill 1432 requires educators and school personnel to take mandated reporter training annually. Licensed childcare providers in the state must take training within 90 days of employment and refresh their training every 2 years after that.
CA AB 506 requires youth service organizations to develop and implement child abuse prevention policies, including requirements for mandated reporting training for admins, employees, and full-time volunteers.
